3. Let's imagine a sculptor building a statue, just chipping away with his chisel. Michelangelo had this elegant way of describing it when he said, "Every block of stone has a statue inside of it, and it's the task of the sculptor to discover it." But what if he worked in the opposite direction? Not from a solid block of stone, but from a pile of dust, somehow gluing millions of these particles together to form a statue....
How many of you have used an electronic spreadsheet, like Microsoft Excel? Very good. Now, how many of you have run a business with a spreadsheet by hand, like my dad did for his small printing business in Philadelphia? A lot less.
Well, that's the way it was done for hundreds of years. ...

For the past few years, I've been spending my summers in the marine biological laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. And there, what I've been doing is essentially renting a boat. What I would like to do is ask you to come on a boat ride with me tonight....

Perhaps the sky is still blue, but I can see the black sky. Perhaps the flowers are still beautiful, but I can see the ugly flowers. Perhaps the sun still shines, but there’s no sun in my world. Perhaps the world doesn’t change, but my world is changing. The exam has been over, but I can’t wake up because I think I did very badly.

Mr. Chairman, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, I should like first of all, to once again thank the Norwegian Nobel Committee for the award they have made to the United Nations Peace-Keeping Operations. Their decision has been acclaimed all over the world. I take this opportunity also to express once again my deep gratitude to the countries, which have contributed troops or provided logisti[點題式英語演講開場欣賞(共2篇)]cal support to these operations. It is to their willing co-operation that we owe the success of this great experiment in conflict control. Peace─the word evokes the simplest and most cherished dream of humanity. Peace is, and has always been, the ultimate human aspiration. And yet our history
overwhelmingly shows that while we speak incessantly of peace, our Aquinas tells a very different story. Peace is an easy word to say in any language. As Secretary-General of the United Nations I hear it so frequently from so many different mouths and different sources, that it sometimes seems to me to be general incantation more or less deprived of practical meaning. What we really mean by peace?
和平在任何語言中都是一個說起來很容易的詞。作為聯合國秘書長,我從不同的語言和不同的地方經常聽到它,以至於有時在我看來,和平這個詞多多少少是失去了其真實意義的.口頭禪。我們所說的和平的真正含義是什麼? As clothes, food, shelter and travel are the four elements for life;
we can not live without one of them. So is the case with other living things. Maybe other living things can live without one of them, but they are not particular about that much. Bacterium is very tiny living things, like a baby in them. What does the baby have to wear? What does the baby have to eat? Where does the baby live? How does the baby move? We would like to know about these.
To me, England is the country, and the country is England. And when I ask myself what I mean by England, when I think of England when I am abroad, England comes to me through my various senses─through the ear, through the eye, and through certain imperishable scents. I will tell you what they are, and there may be those among you who feel as I do.

1.We are drowning in news. Reuters alone puts out three-and-a-half million news stories a year. That's just one source.
my question is: How many of those stories are actually going to matter in the long run? That's the idea behind The Long News. It's a project by The Long Now Foundation, which was founded by TED stars including Kevin Kelly and Stewart Brand. And what we're looking for is news stories that might still matter 50 or 100 or 10,000 years from now. And when you look at the news through that filter, a lot falls by the wayside.
2.Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you, General Caslen, for that introduction. General Trainor, General Clarke, faculty and staff at West Point, you have been outstanding stewards of this proud institution and outstanding mentors for the newest officers in the United States Army.
I’d like to acknowledge the Army’s leadership -- General McHugh -- Secretary McHugh, General Odierno, as well as Senator Jack Reed who is here and a proud graduate of West Point himself. To the class of 20xx, I congratulate you on taking your place on the Long Gray Line.
3.I love trees, and I'm very lucky, because we live near a wonderful arboretum, and Sundays, usually, I'd go there with my wife and now, with my four-year-old, and we'd climb in the trees, we'd play hide and seek. The second school I was at had big trees too, had a fantastic tulip tree, I think it was the biggest in the country, and it also had a lot of wonderful bushes and vegetation around it, around the playing fields.

As a speaker, I’ve only had two complaints from audiences. One, that I talk so loud they can’t fall asleep. And two, that I talk so long they can’t stay awake.
As a speaker, he has often been compared to Abraham Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address. When he finishes his speech, there is also sorrow, tears and mourning ---- especially by the program committee.
Poise is when you finish your speech and the toastmaster thanks you for taking time out of your busy schedule to be a part of their program --- and you nod and smile graciously knowing full well that the only thing on your calendar is a little coffee from breakfast.
I used to get nervous when giving a speech but then I read that it helps to think of the entire audience as being naked. And so, at this very moment, I’m standing up here imagining every one in this audience as being naked. And it really works. I no suffer from nervousness. Eyestrain. Yes.
Personally, I have never been conceited --- and I can’t tell you how much I admire myself for that.
Let me put this into plain English. I’ll translate it for the lawyers later.
Snow
Have you ever seen where the first snowflake fall? Is it on the country road, on the branch of an old oak tree, on the wheat fields in the plain, or between the peaks of the mountain range?
See the snowflakes leaping, dancing like flowers in the whirling wind. The flowers have six angles.Sometimes they are like stars. Sometimes they are only white dots, and they keep on falling gently in silence.
Without your knowing it, the fields, houses, trees and the whole earth are enveloped in a thin coat of snow. I love snow, because it is saintly pure.
Winter differs from the other seasons in that it is not as warm as spring, neither as hot as summer, nor as sad as autumn. The snowflake has her own grace and inspiration. It seems tender, yet it is amazingly attractive.
Good morning/afternoon/evening, ladies and gentleman, Thank you for being on time / making the effort to come today. Let me introduce myself first. My name is...
I am pleased to be able to welcome you to our company... / May I take this opportunity of thanking you for coming. I'm...
I'd like to thank you for inviting/asking me / giving me the chance to...
I am grateful for the opportunity to present...
I am delighted/pleased/glad to have the opportunity to present / of making this presentation...
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to tell you about...
The subject of my presentation is...
Today we are here to talk about... Before we start, I'd like you meet my team members...
Before we start our presentation, let's take a brief look at the agenda...
I won't take up more than ten minutes of your time.
I don't intend to speak for longer than ten minutes.
I know that time is short, so I intend to keep this brief.
My presentation will help solve a problem that has puzzled people for years...
I am going to be talking about a product that could double your profit margins...
Over the next ten minutes you are going to hear about something that will change the way your companies operate...
At the end of this presentation you will understand why this company has been so successful for so long...
i'm a girl loving english very much so i'm glad to have the great chance addressing to you all.

1.Hi. I'm here to talk to you about the importance of praise, admiration and thank you, and having it be specific and genuine.
And the way I got interested in this was, I noticed in myself, when I was growing up, and until about a few years ago, that I would want to say thank you to someone, I would want to praise them, I would want to take in their praise of me and I'd just stop it. And I asked myself, why? I felt shy, I felt embarrassed. And then my question became, am I the only one who does this? So, I decided to investigate....
2. I am a chef and a food policy guy, but I come from a whole family of teachers. My sister is a special ed teacher in Chicago. My father just retired after 25 years teaching fifth grade. My aunt and uncle were professors. My cousins all teach. Everybody in my family, basically, teaches except for me. They taught me that the only way to get the right answers is to ask the right questions.
So what are the right questions when it comes to improving the educational outcomes for our children? There's obviously many important questions, but I think the following is a good place to start...
1. As a speaker, I’ve only had two complaints from audiences. One, that I talk so loud they can’t fall asleep. And two, that I talk so long they can’t stay awake.
2. Some people suffer from stage fright. I don’t. The stage doesn’t bother me at all. It’s the audience that scares the hell out of me!...
3. At one time or another, I think each of us has wished we could turn back the clock. I know if I could turn back the clock just 45 minutes, I’d be the happiest person in this room. Because that’s when I left my speech on the kitchen table...
4. I don’t want to brag, but the last time I did this it brought the audience to its feet. And they never sat down again until they reached their cars...
5. If I’m a little hesitant, you’ll have to excuse me. This is the first after-dinner speech I’ve ever made ---except for yelling at my kids in McDonald’s...
6. I’m not used to speaking to such a large audience. The one thing that gives me courage is that I’m speaking on my favorite subject --- me.
7. People always ask me why I wear a big red ten gallon hat (or some other very noticeable article of clothing) and I tell them. It has to do with taking a positive but practical view of life. For instance, I know that no matter what happens, the good Lord is watching over us. Then again, there are now six billion of us, so I want to make darn sure He can pick me out of the crowd...
