Dear Professor ____
Letters of recommendation are a very important part of the application process. As colleges become more and more sought out from the increasing number of applicants each year, the need to stand out from the competition is also increasing. Below we will provide helpful information on how to write a college recommendation as well as advice for tailoring each letter. Know the candidate - it may sound obvious, but it is important that you know the candidate well. After all, how can you write a college recommendation letter for a someone you know little about? Recommendations written for candidates with a vague familiarity are often identifiable and can do more harm than good.
Obtain a rsum - another tip on how to write a collage recommendation letter is to first obtain the student's rsum with a listing of his or her GPA, activities, awards, leadership roles, community service, employment experience and special skills. The more information you have about a particular
candidate, the more constructive your recommendation can be.

It has come to my attention that our nations, and nations like ours, havelong been plagued by a mysterious occurrence. An occurrence that is asperplexing as it is frustrating, and as baffling as it is widespread, a problemthat finds its origins at the very foot of our society. The problem of which Ispeak is none other than “The Orphan Sock Enigma,” the constant disappearance ofindividual socks during the laundering process. It is a problem familiar to allof us, and also one to which we have unwillingly admitted defeat.
I recently decided that this puzzle had remained unsolved for too long, andresolved to find an explanation. (In the grand tradition of science, I refusedto be discouraged by the basic irrelevance of my cause.) But the truth that Iuncovered is more shocking and fantastic than I could have ever imagined. Myprocedures, observations, and conclusions are as follows:
First, to verify that the problem exists, experimental and control loads oflaundry were completely processed (put through the washer and dryer). In thexperimental load (load with socks), by the end of the process, some socks werelost. But in the control load (load without socks), no socks were lost. Thus theproblem was verified.
Next the progress of a load of socks was carefully monitored. The resultsindicated that sock disappearance occurs during the period of time when the loadis in the dryer. Following this conclusion, a literature search was done and avery significant fact was uncovered: there is no mention of socks disappearingin dryers before the invention of dryers in the 1920s. All evidence clearlypointed to the dryer. And it is there that I would find the answer to theenigma.
Then, the actual experiment was done. In four separate trials, a number ofsocks (ten socks, or five pairs) were put through a normal drying cycle. Thetypes of socks tested were selected by the highly accurate Harvey-AllmanPrinciple Hierarchy and Zero Alternative Reduction Dimension.

Growing up in a modest village in China, I hardly ever had the chance tosee many examples of modern technology; people who dig wells by hand to obtaindrinking wateruse ox-driven plows to cultivate their fields don’t have much usefor televisiopersonal computers. Sitting on the floor with a confused grin, surrounded by wiresmetal, I looked up at my fatheraskedthe noises were…
……I first read this paragraphMadame Curie as a 14-year-old child,I stillremember how wonderful I felt. I remember thinking, “What esteemed men theywere! How hard they worked!” As I grew older, this paragraph became a source ofencouragement in the face of adversity. I begin to feel a magical blue lighttwinkling in my heart, kindling a love of science, encouraging me to chargebravely into the unknown world.
I never forgot my adolescent idol, Maria Curie. As I re-read the book, another pa age leaped out: “She was now 24-an age when some of her greatcontemporaries were to be on the brink of major discoveries… Maria took thetrainWarsaw to Paris, the intellectual Mecca.”
I live in Pakistan-a country destroying itself with bombs, guns and governments' blabber to find justifications for what it is going through;a country where a former president is murdered in public, where the nation's constitution and parliament are suspended at the same time, and where the voice of a common man is unheard.
Since the last few years, I had aspired to become a doctor. The idea of "scalpels," "opened chests" and "sutures" had always intrigued me.And then it happened! The recent unprecedented events in my country wiped off the dust of disillusionment from my eyes;I lost my will to become a doctor. However, the turmoil in the country led me towards newspapers and news channels, and hence Politics.
As I involved myself into politics,I realized that it is all-embracive-wielding its way over social and economic life-it is the omnipotent of Pakistan. It can mobilize public opinion, gear up propaganda machinery, make or repeal laws and what not.Backed up by public opinion, supported by the majority of the legislators, armed with the means to keep the people in a state of ignorance, political power crosses the limits of dictatorial powers.Political power, like the most powerful intoxicant, makes the persons in power to forget social ethics, political morality and obligations.
Most of the learned youth in this country consider Politics to be "a refuge for the scoundrels" and this derogatory remark may be true if we look at the deceptive and degenerated type of politicians indulging in a dirty game. All these political parties are votaries of democracy, but the way they conduct themselves inside their own parties is nothing but senseless authoritarianism. Therefore a very few students choose to pursue Politics as a profession, but what they don't realize is that if we don't take a stand the system can never be changed. Thus,I want to study Politics so I can come back to my country and contribute what little I can do for my homeland and its people. If I can inspire even a single person,it would be worth it.The world today is growing global. We are now not only to think of our own nation but as and when we think of it,we have to keep the international perception in mind;consequently,I chose Politics with International Relations as one of my courses.
Studying in UK will breed a sense of individuality and self reliance.I would be able to interact with people from everywhere and get to know about their culture. This would not only open new horizons for me,but would also clear some preconceived notions one has about the other.I have always been an active participant of debates.I have participated in 3 Model UN conferences out of which I was awarded with the Best Delegate award in two. I was also one of the two students to be selected from my school to participate in the English Speaking Union '08.Moreover, I've taken part in Parliamentary style debates too. Therefore I believe I can communicate effectively in public and language will not be a barrier in my education.Furthermore, I have worked as an internee at Al-Shifa Eye Hospital for a month in summers. Here I learnt how to deal with patients, use the Auto Ref, handle files and punctuality. We also campaigned to a remote area near Murree where we helped the doctors in examining the patients free of cost.Another experience which taught me a lot was when me and my fellow colleagues volunteered to paint walls for the SOS Children's Village. In addition,I worked with SUNGI (NGO) where a group of 5 of us had to organize an event to pay tribute to 1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize.
I enjoy Literature, especially the works of Shakespeare,Tennessee Williams,Thomas Hardy and Andrew Marvell.I'd be delighted to study in a challenging atmosphere where I can focus on my studies.I commit to my work and my ability to think out of the box, keenness for Politics and my perception of things,I understand, gives me an edge over others.I believe in myself, and if provided with an opportunity,I'd make the university proud.

Born in Beijing, China’s political capital, cultural center and economichub, and nurtured in a well-cultured family and an empowering community, I havedeveloped a meaningful outlook on lie. I identify myself with such values thatone gives meaning to life when one lives to give. Success stories of my parents, relatives and friends along their career-path have entrenched my belief inbeing independent and confident as a contributing memeber of the community.
As I look back on early days of my schooling , I am just as grateful to myworking parents for having sent me to one of the best boarding schools inBeijing where I received quality primary education and learned to appreciateindependence. As I recall , being independent was probably the biggest asset Igained as a teenager with the absence of parental guardianship for most of those6 years. After I upgraded to secondary school, I offered to go to school bybike. Though hesitant at first, my parents gave their well-thought-out consentto the 15-km ride average Chinese parents would simply veto in the first placegiven the “one-child policy”and subsequent “little emperors” pampered by parentsand grandparents. Thankfully, that day-to-day routine bike trip, rain orsunshine, tempered my strong character. I have been holding myself to higheststandards, academically and physically from primary school days through tocollege life. I have grown up all these years amongst top cohorts and have beenexposed to varied horizons and dimensions of school life in and outside ofclassroom. I am perfectly healthy and stong with a sharp mind and demonstratedcommitment to teamwork. I was handpicked to play for school baseball team when Iwas in primary school. Back then, my proven leadership and excellent skills inthe field assured my coach that I was born to be a team leader. And I didjustice to his well-timed appointment by heading a team of Beijing to compete inShanghai and Hong Kong several times. And the strong track record of outoutstanding performances each time still fills me with pride and excitementtoday. During one match tour to Hong Kong in the 1990s, I was immediatel exposedto the enviable luxury and prosperity of the city, the dynamic economic center ofAsia. That trip awakened me ,for the first time, to the value of wealth andfinance. And it was that very journey to the thriving metropolis that shaped myambition to be a financer.
Years later, when the colleg entrance exam came, that moment of life anddeath for most of senior high school students in China,my top preference wasFinance Colllege of Beijing Technology and Business Unversity. The result cameas a sad surprise as I was admitted to Computer Science College instead. But Istuck with my dream major and decided to minor in finance. I have since workedhard to equip myself with systematic knowledge of finance. As a result , I amdnow well on my way to graduation with double degrees in both computer scienceand finance in 20__.
During my college days,I led my cohorts in starting up a micro company as Idabbled into the real business world. We settled for newspaper as our maidenattempt.. As a new horn,I took a hands-on approach, from editing to circulating, from cost control to market survey. My strong leadership and sunergy of theentire team kept this mini organization going pretty well in its infancy. Yetinexperience in operation and cost management led to a failed business in theend. But I saw the silver lining in the failed venture. I now know more aboutwhere I need to work on. When I was a little boy, my parents taught me how tomanage money in the safest way. They helped me put my pocket money in the bankand get interest as a return. Now, as a grown-up already,I recognize thatsystematic learning and book knowledge can truely help me know how much moreabout what finance is all about. Naturally, as one’s knowledge about swimmingincreases, the desire to swim in the sea grows. Yet, with more academicexposure, I have come to realize how I am ill-equipped with the knowledge neededto stay afloat in the trubulent sea of finance. That self-conscious humblenessversus the profundiy of finance as a much-respected discipline has led me to optfor further study in the US,home to a number of world-class colleges offinance.
After meticulous comparision and cross-checking, I have settled for ClarkUniversity, the birthplace of the first-ever graduate school in the US. I trustthat demanding academic standards here and ,best of all ,great mastermind offinance that Clark can offer will undoubtedly broaden my horizon and update myvision as financier of the future. To me,Clark is the best and right place thatcan surely make the difference, academically and professionally alike. I am morethan anxious to embrace those best minds in Clark and contribute my humble partto its huge wealth of knowledge and innovative ideas. I am therefore very muchlooking forward to a positive reply from Clark, my dream campus. May that offercome just in time for my journey towards a rewading learning experience in oneof the greatest colleges in the US.

Dead silence.
My left knee trembled uncontrollably. Why did no one speak? My hands beganto shake so I pulled them behind me-like one condemned. My eyes gauged thedistance to the door.
Then someone began to clap. More joined in. Tim looked into my eyes andsmiled. He smiled!
Joy, oh joy. My soul overflowed with rapture. I had done it! He noticed me!All the shame, all the worry, and all the castigation melted away in thatmoment. I knew how to make him love me. I simply had to speak better, singbetter, act better, and write better than anyone else. Determined, I joinedcompetitions, played in concerts, and wrote essays that were read in class. WhenTim transferred to the A.P. class, so did I. I threw myself into classdiscussions, attempting to dazzle him with my intelligence and intrepidity.Making friends with his friends, I dogged his steps.
The next summer Tim moved away. I never heard from him again. But thetransformation in me had taken place. Now I was involved for the simple pleasureof being involved. Challenging people surrounded me. Biff taught me to love.Dave taught me to laugh. Ramez taught me to break my limits. Alit gave meconfidence. Whenever I was in danger of reverting to a wallflower, one of my newfriends would drag me into another club or activity.
