六級近義詞辨析

blaze,flame
 

兩詞在作名詞講時為“火焰”的意思。 blaze是比flame強烈的火焰,即“烈火”。blaze在具體表達上也與flame不同,flame常用複數。

1.the fire burned slowly at first,but soon burst into a blaze.起初火著得挺慢,但很快就成了一片火海。 

2.my nephew committed all the letters from his girl friend to the flames.我侄兒把他女朋友給他的所有的信件都付之一炬。
 

envisage,visualize 

兩個詞都可以譯成“構想”。envisage不是視覺效果的想像,而是對將來的一種預測,可用foresee或foretell來解釋;visualize是指視覺的想像,在腦子裡勾畫出picture,可用 imagine來解釋。

1.nobody can envisage the consequences of total nuclear war.沒人能想像出全面核戰爭的後果。
 
2.i can't envisage the plan's working.我無法構想計畫能否行得通。

3.i remember meeting him but i just can't visualize him.我記得我見過他,可就是想不起他的樣子。

4.jerry visualized the house as a romantic ruin.傑瑞把那所房子想像成有傳奇色彩的廢墟。


epoch ,era

epoch“新時代,紀元“,不指歷史中的朝代或統治時代,指以某重大事件或巨大變化為起點的新的歷史時期;era指歷史上的“獨立時代,統治時代”。

1.the bombing of hiroshima marked anepoch in man's history.廣島核子彈的爆炸標誌著人類歷史進入到了一個新紀元。

2.the romanera is computed from the date when rome was supposedly founded.羅馬時代是以推測出的羅馬城的建立日期算起的。


tempt,elicit


tempt“誘惑,引誘,慫恿;引起”,基本用法tempt +sb.to do /in doing;elicit“誘出,引出,抽出”,賓語就是誘出的結果。
 

1.she was tempted to bear a false witness.她被慫恿做偽證。

2.the hot weather tempted me to go swimming.炎熱的天氣使我想去游泳。

3.i succeeded in eliciting from his secretary the information i needed.我從他的秘書那裡探得我所要知道的信息。

4.at last we've elicited the truth from him.我們終於從他那裡探得真相。
 

potential,latent

potential“可能性的,有可能的;有潛在能力的(已察覺)”,其英文釋義為“that can come into existence;possible;in existence and capable of being developed or used”。latent“潛在的,隱伏的,不易察覺的”,有時用於貶義,其英語釋義為“existing but not yet active,developed or visible”。另外可以表示醫學上的潛伏期(latent period)和物理上的潛熱(latent heat)。

1.we were aware of the danger latent in that measure.對那項措施中潛伏的危險我們是了解到的。

2.the potential power of the people should not be ignored.人民的潛力是不應被忽視的。
 

declare,proclaim


兩詞皆有“宣布,宣稱”之意。在用法上也類似:都可以跟that從句,跟名詞賓語或跟名詞+to be...。proclaim一般指權力機關或政府領導宣布或宣稱;declare則可以是普通個人作主語。
 

1.the referee declared him to be the winner of the fight.裁判宣布他為該項比賽的勝利者。

2.i declared at the meeting that i did not support him.我在會議上聲明我不支持他。

3.the governor proclaimed that he would first tackle the unemployment problem.州長宣布他將首先解決失業問題。

4.after its independence india was proclaimed(i.e.officially declared to be)a republic.印度獨立之後宣布成立共和國。

displace,replace


replace側重於以新代舊或補遺復原,並不意味著原物已失去作用;displace常指以某物擠掉另一物,含強迫之意。

1.the surprise in his face was replaced by great joy.他臉上的表情由大驚轉為大喜。

2.i will replace the worn-out tyres with new ones.我要用新輪胎替換那磨損不堪的老輪胎。

3.with the development of computers, many employees have been displaced by computers.隨著計算機的發展,計算機擠掉了大批的員工。
 

solitary ,desolate


solitary意思為“單獨的,獨自的,獨居的”,但不一定是感覺孤獨。特別是指物時意為there is only one。它通常作定語。desolate狹指感情方面的寂寞。

1.did you see a solitary tree in the garden?你看見花園裡那棵孤零零的樹了嗎?

2.a solitary walk獨自一人的散步

3.the death of his wife left him completely desolate.他妻子的去世使他倍感孤獨。
