公元1世紀初，歐洲的天主教會把11月1日定為“天下聖徒之日”，意思是在紀念所有的聖人的那一天，要舉行彌撒儀式。相傳自公元前500年，居住在愛爾蘭，蘇格蘭等地的凱爾特人把這節日往前移了一天，即10月31日。
相傳每年的這一天，所有死去的人的亡魂都會來找到活人，並把自己的靈魂寄生到他們身上，以獲得新生，這是他們能重生的方法。活人們當然不會把這個機會給那些亡魂。所以，他們想出一個辦法：每到這個節日，他們就打扮成妖魔鬼怪，以此來嚇走那些亡魂。
現在的萬聖節，完全沒什麼恐怖的氣氛，而是充滿了歡樂。小孩子們會穿著恐怖的服裝，挨家挨戶的喊出Trickortreat來向別人討要糖吃。如果不給的話，他們就會懲罰不給糖的人，直到別人肯給糖為止。

萬聖節和中元節最初都是和祭祀習俗有關的。但隨著人類的發展，都發生了演變。現在呢，西方萬聖節主要是搞怪和狂歡，而我國的中元節，還是比較莊重和肅靜的。西方萬聖節比較開放，家家戶戶都在進行互動，而中元節只是在自己家裡默默進行。
