able，capable
這一對詞都是形容詞，又都含有能夠、能幹之意，但涵義和使用場合有所不同，大致有如下幾點區別：
（一）
在用作定語表示能幹的意味時，able所描述的範圍較概括，capable所描述的範圍較專注，因為前者指某人聰明能幹，有多才多藝的概括涵義；後者僅指具有應付某一特指工作要求的能力。例：
She is an able teacher
她是個能幹的教師。
She is a capable teacher．
她是個能勝任工作的教師。
（二）
able指能夠，是一時之現象；capable常用以指能力，是經常的現象。如：
I shall not be able to come to the office tomorrow．
明天我不能到辦公室來（指由於某種原因而暫時不能來）。
She is incapable of manual labour．
她不能從事體力勞動（指由於某種長期或經常的原因，例如患病而不能勞動）。
（三）
指某人能作某事時，able之後接動詞不定式，capable之後接介詞of.例如：
We are able to get back to town before dark．
我們能夠天黑之前趕回市區。
They are not capable of doing the work．
他們沒有能力做這件工作。
