理解詞義

（一）不可望文生義

1. kaiser william’s germany 德皇威廉的德國

kaiser除做人名“凱澤”解外，還可作普通名詞“德國皇帝”解，就其詞源來說，凱澤和德皇都是從古羅馬的凱撒大帝來的。

2. florence nightingale 南丁格爾 而非“佛羅倫斯夜鶯”

3. on a scientific approach to metaphysics 論以科學方法探討玄學

approach: 此處意為“處理問題的方法”而非“接近”

4. drawing room  客廳

withdrawing room 的縮略，說得是飯後女士們退到這裡，留下男士們繼續飲酒。

拿破崙把威尼斯的聖馬可廣場稱為 drawing room of europe.

5. a measure of relief 一定程度的寬慰 而非一項救濟措施

measure: 從詞源看，基本意思是“測量”

 wealth is not a measure of happiness. 財富不是衡量幸福的標準 而非財富不是實現幸福的措施。

 《共榮與夢想》中說到美國國會通過一項measure，此處等同於bill, 應譯為法案，而非措施。

6. they aimed the missiles at the police. 他們向警察投擲這些東西。 而非 他們把飛彈向警察瞄準。

missile：最先出現於17世紀初，意為“投射物”（包括是石塊、失、子彈等），而飛彈是新近才有得東西。

aim…at: 除可作“把…對準”解以外，還可作“把…擲向”解。

7. telescopic cane 縮折手杖 而非帶有望遠鏡的手杖

telescopic來自telescope, telescope 基本意為望遠鏡， 從詞源說是遠望意，但望遠鏡的一個特點是其套管可疊縮，所以telescope作為動詞可作“疊縮”和“縮短”解。因此telescopic不僅可作“望遠鏡的”解，還可作“可伸縮”的解。

telescopic rifle是裝有望遠鏡瞄準器的步槍

telescopic (ejection) gun 卻是套筒式彈射器

(二) 善用詞典

good riddance 可慶幸的擺脫 意為可喜的擺脫（指擺脫討厭的人或事物）

display a cynical disregard for human life 是人命如草芥

more than its share（此句its指某地區，整句談這個地區的危機）譯為“分外多”（著眼於整個短語，採取整體譯法），比直譯為“超過它的份額”優

faded before them (指attacks) 譯為“抵抗漸漸停止了”優於“在它們面前消失了”

as the crow flies 沿直線 直線距離 源於烏鴉之類的鳥都是沿直線飛行的 換成雕或魔毯也是說直線距離：“in fact i am 100 miles from the border as the eagle flies.”; “it is 5700 miles from manhattan to mecca as the carpet flies.”

in a nutshell 簡括地說：“that, in an oyster shell, is the sad story of the ‘buy american’ campaign.”; “here is the congressional outlook in an aspirin box.” 這三個短語意思都一樣，因堅果殼、牡蠣殼、阿司匹林盒都是很小的東西。

game of “chicken” 比膽量遊戲，指兩個少年各開一輛汽車在馬路上的同一條車道上迎面行駛，離開車道的膽小的人“chicken”就輸了。當時的美國國務卿臘斯克曾說過：“in this era, you don’t play the game of ‘chicken’ with the lives of hundreds of millions of people at stake.”

chew one’s fingernails 有心事 傷腦筋 源於英美人在有心事時往往啃指甲 如：in such a case, the soviet leadership can stop chewing its collective fingernails.

ice-skate in hell 做不可能做的事情 源於西方人認為地獄中倒處都是火 因此不可能在地獄中滑冰 例：they will be ice-skating in hell the day when i vote the aid for them. 除非太陽從西邊出來，我不會投票贊成援助他們。

bite the bullet 勇敢行為 甘心受苦 源於有時在戰地做手術， 沒有麻醉藥， 傷者只好咬子彈， 以幫助忍受疼痛

moment of truth 決定性時刻 源於鬥牛時鬥牛士自己的勇氣的真實性受到考驗的時刻

back to square one 回到起點 無所進展 square one是一種叫做snakes and ladders的棋的棋盤上的第一個格子

in classless russia, some are more equal than others. 其中more equal than短語源於英國作家喬治·奧威爾在1945寫的映射史達林時代的政治諷刺小說《獸園》，據說裡面的動物表面上平等，實際上比其他動物高一等， 可以說是帶引號的平等， 上述短語正為其意。

20世紀70年代尼克森把中國人稱為our dedicated opponent 譯為“堅決與我們對立的對手”而非“我們的富於獻身精神的對手”，這裡的dedicated不是一般的dedicated而是dedicated to反對美國。
