縮寫詞又稱首字母縮略詞，將幾個詞的首字母加在一起合成一字，全部用大寫字母拼成，從而代替一組冗長複雜的詞或詞組。這樣，既可節省版面標題詞數，又能更好地提示新聞內容，使人讀來頗感簡潔易記，還可使版面編排減少沉悶之感。例如：
cppcc head meets returned overseas students in beijing. (cppcc=the chinese people's political consultative conference中國人民政治協商會議)
全國政協主席在京接見歸國留學生。
aids victims surging in us. (aids=acquired immune deficiency syndrome：後天免疫缺損綜合症，即“愛滋病”)
美“愛滋病”患者激增。
plo says big israeli drive ahead. (plo=palestine liberation organization：巴勒斯坦解放組織)
巴解組織稱以色列即將大舉進攻。
從以上數則實例中不難發現，英語新聞標題中經常出現的縮寫詞主要分為三類：
1、組織機構等專有名稱，如上述例句中的cppcc (全國政協)和plo(巴解組織)。又如：
unesco=united nations educational, scientific and cultural organization(聯合國教科文組織)
imf=international monetary fund(國際貨幣基金組織)
asean=association of southeast asian nations(東南亞國家聯盟；“東協”)
gatt=general agreement on tariffs and trade(關貿總協定)

ope=organization of petroleum exporting countries(石油輸出國組織；“歐佩克”)
plo=palestine liberation organization(巴勒斯坦解放組織；“巴解”)

3、表示人們的職業、職務或職稱的名詞，如 mp(議員)。又如：
