如何寫留學自薦信
全面深刻地審視自己、尋找獨特的角度以及注重運用細節是必須注意的問題。下面還有一些材料的取捨問題提出來供讀者參考。
首先，千萬不要遺漏掉那些有用的和中肯的成就、經驗等事實。
申請研讀的學位越高，以往的科研、學術成果和工作經驗等等就越是重要。許多申請者錯誤地認為自己發表的文章已經列在履歷裡面了，在 自薦信 中就不應該再提。其實，個人履歷是一份完全不同的檔案。它是對個人經歷的一種簡潔而全面的介紹，使得讀者對申請者能夠很快有一個大致的了解。 自薦信 則是需要(或是希望)讀者仔細閱讀的，它要介紹申請者的成就、抱負和個人品德。所以申請者不用擔心內容上的重複。還有許多申請者硬是要把自薦信的篇幅壓縮在一頁紙內，因而只能很簡要地提到自己的成就。其實，如果內容充實，為什麼不能寫到二至三頁呢?比如說到發表的論文，往往只提到一個題目。其實，寫一篇科研論文往往是要付出巨大心血的。這不光是寫篇文章，而是反覆的科學論證和無數次實驗的結晶。申請者起碼應該用二至三個句子，說明這篇論文所代表的實驗、實驗用的方法、目的和獲得的成績。還應該說明通過發表這篇(或這幾篇)論文，申請者在這一領域做出了什麼貢獻，獲得了哪些思想方法、認識和科研手段上的提高。
還有的申請者犯的是一個相反的錯誤，他們把高中甚至更早的成就也不厭其煩地列在自薦信上。比如當上了三好學生、少先隊長之類的。因為中國學生申請的學位最低的也是碩士研究生，大學時期的成績或是隨後工作上的成就更為貼切，也應該足以用作素材了。當然，少兒時期的成就，若是對隨後的學術道路產生了重大的影響的，也可以提。有的申請者對某一學科，比如說數學，情有獨鍾，很早就顯露出天才，在中學時期就在數學競賽中獲獎，由此激發了對此學科的強烈興趣，從此矢志不渝。這樣提就非常妥當。
最好不提的還有政治觀點、宗教信仰和其它一切容易引起爭議的不同尋常的話題。有個別申請者在檔案中提到了“上帝”這樣的眼，犯了西方社會宗教和學術分離的大忌。
最後一點提醒讀者注意的是，對自己的事業和生活道路上的挫折沒有必要諱莫如深。許多傑出的人物都曾經歷過困頓。人們一般會欣賞那些不被困難壓倒，不因失敗沮喪，在逆境中尋找光明的人。關鍵在於你是否用積極正面的態度對待挫折並表現出這種積極的態度。
留學申請時，自檢信的作用很重要，好的自薦信對申請人來說能夠起到事半功倍的作用。在寫自薦信時，必然會提及被自薦人的品性（characters）。
