西方文化中因為對個人誠信看的很重，尤其是在學術圈，教授們對於名譽和操守的在意程度通常高過了科研水平。所以在申請研究生院的時候，美國學生的推薦信一般是會有很大分量的，尤其是在推薦信的寫作人是知名教授或者推薦人和申請學校的教授之間認識的情況。
