代替主句的現在分詞短語

下面A和B中的現在分詞結構主要用於書面英語。

A如主語同時做出兩個動作時,通常其中的一個動作可以由現在分詞來表示,這時分詞既可

以放在動詞不定式之前,也可以放在之後:Herodeaway.Hewhistledashewent.他騎馬走了。他一邊走一邊吹著口哨。相當於:Herodeawaywhistling.

他吹著口哨騎馬走了。

Heholdstheropewithonehandandstretchesouttheothertotheboyinthewater.相

當於:Holdingtheropewithonehand,hestretches…

他一隻手拉著繩子,把另一隻手伸給水中的男孩。

B如主語所做的一個動作緊接著所做的另一個動作,第一個動作常常用現在分詞來表示,而且分詞必須放在前面:Heopenedthedrawerandtookoutarevolver.相當於:Openingthedrawerhetookoutarevolver.

他打開抽屜,拿出了一把左輪手槍。

Sheraisedthetrapdoorandpointedtoaflightofsteps.相當於:Raisingthetrapdoorshepointedtoaflightofsteps.

她把翻板活門拉開,指著一段台階。

Wetakeoffourshoesandcreepcautiouslyalongthepassage.相當於:Takingoffourshoeswecreepcautiouslyalongthepassage.

我們脫了鞋,小心地、偷偷地沿著走廊走過去.

這裡好像用現在分詞的完成式更合乎邏輯,如Havingopened,Havingraised,Havingtakenoff等。但除了使用現在分詞的一般式可能使意思含混不清的時候以外,不必要使用完成式。

舉一個必須使用分詞完成式的例子:Eatinghisdinnerherushedoutofthehouse會給人這樣一種印象,好像他手裡還拿著菜盤子就走出了房子。因此,這裡最好用HavingeatenHisdinner…形式。

C第二個動作構成第一個動作的一部分時或第二個動作是第一個動作的結果時,可以用現在分詞表示第二個動作:Shewentout,slammingthedoor.

這樣使用的現在分詞的主語並不一定要同前面的動詞的主語相同。它可以有自己的主語:Theplanecrashed,itsbombsexplodingatithittheground.

飛機墜毀了,它攜帶的炸彈在它觸地的同時爆炸了。

現在分詞可代替as/since/because+主語+動詞,即分詞可

注意:當being位於句首時,通常意為asheis或ashewas(由於他是……):Beingastudenthewasnaturallyinterestedinmuseums.相當於:Because/Ashewasastudent…

他作為一個學生,自然對博物館感興趣。

這裡beingastudent的意思並不是whilehewasastudent(在他學生時代)。

這樣使用的分詞的主語並不一定要與跟在後面的動詞的主語相同。它可以帶有自己的主語:Thedaybeingfine,wedecidedtogoswimming.

天氣好,我們決定去游泳。

在這種情況下分詞必須跟在作其主語的名詞/代詞之後。Be-ingfinetheday,wedecided…是錯誤的。但是Beingathletic,Tomfoundtheclimbquiteeasy(作為運動員,湯姆覺得這次爬山比較容易)是正確的,因為湯姆同時是found和後面跟著的climb的主語。同一個句子中可以連著用兩個或兩個以上的現在分詞:Realizingthathehadn’tenoughmoneyandnotwantingtoborrowfromhisfather,hedecidedtopawnhiswatch.

知道自己錢不夠,又不想從父親那裡借錢,他決定把手錶當掉。

Notknowingthelanguageandhavingnofriendsinthetown,hefoundithardtogetapieceofwork.

既不懂當地語言,在此城又沒有朋友,他發現自己很難找到一份工作。

分詞的完成式強調第一個動作在第二個動作開始前就已經完成,但除非使用現在分詞的一般

式可能使意思混淆不清外,一般不必要使用這種結構。下面是造成混淆的一個例子:Read-ing

theinstructions,hesnatchedupthefireextinguisher。這句話給人的印象好像是兩個動

作同時發生的。因此在這裡用分詞的完成式比較合適:Havingreadtheinstructions,hesnatchedupthefireextinguisher.

看完了說明書之後,他迅速拿起了滅火器。

如果兩個動作之間有一段間隔,則必須用分詞的完成式:Havingfailedtwice,hedidn’twanttotryagain.

已經失敗了兩次,他不想再試了。

如第一個動作持續一段時間時,也必須用分詞的完成式:Havingbeenhisownbossforsuch

alongtime,hefoundithardtoacceptordersfromanother.

280誤連分詞

通常認為分詞是說明它前面的名詞或代詞:Tom,horrifiedatwhathehaddone,couldatfirstsaynothing.

湯姆被自己所做的事嚇壞了,一開始都說不出話來了。

Romeo,believingthatJulietwasdead,decidedtokillhimself.

羅密歐相信朱麗葉已死,就決定自殺。

Amancarryingalargeparcelgotoutofthebus.

一個拿著一大包東西的男人下了公共汽車。

但要注意分詞也可被主要動詞把它跟所說明的名詞或代詞隔開:JonesandSmithcamein,followedbytheirwives.

瓊斯和史密斯進來了,他們的妻子跟在後邊。

Sherushedpastthepoliceman,hopinghewouldn’taskwhatshehadinhersuitcase.她趕緊從警察身邊走過去,希望他不會問起手提箱裡有什麼。

如果在分詞前面沒有名詞或代詞,則認為分詞是說明後面主要動詞的主語的:Stunnedbytheblow,Peterfellheavily.

彼得被這一擊打昏了,重重地倒了下去。(彼得被擊暈了。)

那惡棍相信他身邊沒別人了,出聲說出了自己的想法。

如果不遵守上述法則,就會造成混亂。Waitingforabusabrickfellonmyhead的意思似乎是說磚頭在等候公共汽車,那豈非笑話。分詞與名詞或代詞被這樣錯誤地連線時就叫做誤

連分詞。上述句子應改寫成:AsIwaswaitingforabusabrickfellonmyhead.

在我等公共汽車時一塊磚頭落到了我的頭上。
