The Telephone
The telephone is one of the most welcome and useful electrical devices ever invented. No wonder more and more families have got to use their own telephones today.
The telephone makes things easy in many ways. Especially, after the mobile telephone① appears, communication of information becomes more easy and rapid. To students and people going out for business far away from their homes, the telephone can shorten② the distance from their parents and wives and husbands and children. Thus they will get comfort in mind whenever they are homesick③ or they run into trouble. With the help of the telephone, people can keep in touch with anyone at any time and any place for urgent④ help. In such a case,the telephone is especially important. When we read an advertisement in a newspaper or watch it on TV, we can ask for more information of a product through the telephone and even place an order.⑤
All in all, the telephone is so helpful that we can say that nowadays we can not live without the telephone in our daily life. We will further improve the performance of the telephone so as to create better conditions for its development.

【寫法指要】
1）本文的正文，即擴充段，分為三個層次：電話對學生和外出辦事人員的便利和好處；人們在緊急情況下可以和別人取得聯繫，求得幫助；通過電話可以獲得產品信息，進行訂貨。這就是說，文章從三個方面展開或支撐了主題句中的制約思想（controlling idea）“make things easy in many ways”（多方面給人以方便）。從而，說明了電話在當今社會的功能。
2）在上述三個層次里，作者均使用了句法和辭彙上的強調手段。第一層意思里的“ their parents and wives and husbands and children”是連詞疊用（polysyndeton），它能使要表達的內容更加緊密，從而取得強調的效果。第二層意思里的“any one at any time and any place”是一種語音修辭手段，稱為“諧元韻”（assonance），即在一連串詞語裡相同的重讀音節或相似元音互相呼應。在這個短語裡，any的[e]，at的[$]，以及and的[$]相呼應，取得了強調“任何時間、任何地點，任何人”的效果。第三層意思里用了“even”一詞，它本身的含義就有強調作用。
